BIG FLOPPY RANT

I think tumblr is a bit dangerous. It seems to be melting pot of depression and angst and wishing for what you can’t have. Lots of people are overindulging in an almost “trend” of moaning depressive behaviour. Depression is a serious thing but I think people claim it without really knowing. Depression isn’t just a deep sadness - at least with sadness you can reason. You know why you’re sad. ANYWAY, I know it’s good to have a moan, but I genuinely worry that there is a bad sort of culture on here that feeds negativity.

Who was it who said self pity destroys everything but itself? So don’t indulge those sad feelings, focus on what is good. You don’t need a prince charming to magically whisk you away and you don’t need to be rich and famous to have an adventurous, fulfilling and meaningful life.

This is a bit of a rant, but it makes me crosssss when people moan so much. Everyone I know on here has a home and some family and doesn’t go hungry etc etc. You’re not living in wartorn countries, you have your freedom and education. These thing make you among the most privileged people in the world.

Also, we’re all sad about something. PLEASE don’t cry wolf for those who have genuine issues with depression.

DISCLAIMER: I knoooow this will annoy people, but it is aimed at nobody in particular and of course there are some exceptions and holes in my logic but I think there are some valid points. JUST BE HAPPYYYY

Selah Sue, a Belgian little raggamuffin with an obscure and passionate voice. Here she is performing Summertime Bring Me Joy at the Soul Kitchen

One of my favourites from the Jesse James soundtrack by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis. Listen to it and read a book about the circus and you’ll have yourself a jolly little magical evening.

Beauty

True beauty is understated and non-contrived

Look up this band. You shan’t regret it.

Most Beautiful

In my opinion Eva Green is the most beautiful. I’m rather infatuated.

She also makes rather enjoyable films. Be sure to check out Cracks, The Dreamers and Womb.

The two drummers. The simple bass and the cool use of auto-tune. Auto-tune is being used in some awesome music lately by some great singers. Polica perform Wandering Star here live for 89.3 The Current.

Who Are You?

Positive: I am kind.

Negative: I am not very forgiving.

Secret: I like a giiiiirl.

Just look them up. And then feel cool.

I have a few followers now and I think this blog will be far more fruitful for everybody involved if it were interactive and there was communication. Tell me one positive thing about yourself, one negative and one secret. I’m sure you can do so anonymously if you wish. I’ll do the same if I get a decent response. Or just one response.

Justin Vernon

Before I continue with this blog I must confess something. You may have already guessed but I am rather avid Justin Vernon listener. My appreciation extends to anything he does, be it Bon Iver or Gayngs or Volcano Choir or DeYarmond Edison or as Justin Vernon or JD Vernon or with Mount Vernon or Eau Claire Memorial Jazz I Ensemble or Kanye West or The Shouting Matches or St. Vincent or anything else I can find such as the song I posted just below this.

Now I’m not an obsessive. I’m not a NUMBER 1 FAN YEEEEEAAAAHH!!!!!!! I just think he makes fantastic music. The music that has always inherently inhabited my head, he seems to have managed to record. And it’s present in all that he does. His music exists for all the right reasons. It’s organic and you are able to take it for what it is.

Now I was lucky enough to see a Bon Iver show not so long ago and I would rate it as the best concert I have been to. The sound was amazing. You were inside it.

Before they played The Wolves (Act I and II), Justin Vernon said a perfectly quotable - if slightly corny - few words which reinforced my notion that he just loves to make great music and play it with people. Addressing the audience he said:

“Now I don’t want to sing along with you. And I don’t want you to sing along with us. But let’s just all sing it together, man”.

A humble smile followed and the song began. Five minutes later I’d jizzed myself with wonder and amazement and my friend, who was sat next to me, was an emotional train wreck.

Take from that what you will, but I thought it was pretty cool.

Justin Vernon and Aaron Dessner unite for the Dark Was The Night compilation album benefiting the Red Hot Organization, an international charity that raises funds and awareness for HIV and AIDS. The Song is called Big Red Machine. As it was World Aids Day yesterday, I thought it quite apt. Also it is a beautiful song in itself.

A short film to accompany each song on Bon Iver’s Bon Iver. Feast your eyes as you gorge your ears.

Bon Iver nominated for four Grammy Awards

Including new artist? Bon Iver aren’t new. People have just had their heads stuck up their bums too long.

Ignorance is in abundance if you read all the reports. FOR EXAMPLE digitalspy note that “Bon Iver - born Justin Vernon - will face country trio The Band Perry, J Cole, Nicki Minaj and dubstep artist Skrillex in the ‘Best New Artist’ category.” Born Justin Vernon? He didn’t change his name. It’s not even his moniker really. It’s the band, the project’s name. Tumblr, I swear has more accurate, better writers on it. Four Grammy noms, though…POW!
